Why do we hate our bodies?

OK, so here’s a statistic that is… pretty horrendous.

It’s been reported that 97% of women think “intensely negative thoughts” about their bodies at least once a day. 97%, people. That’s basically every single woman on earth. This is… craziness.

So, why do we hate our bodies so much?

Why do we feel so much self-criticism, stress, and agony about our physical forms?

Where does all this negativity come from?

Well… there’s not just one reason. There are thousands of reasons.

Reason #1. When the neighborhood bully taunts someone, saying, “You throw like a girl,” as if being a girl is the lowest, most shameful thing you could possibly be.

Reason #2. When the mean kids at school tease you for showing too much skin (“slut”) or for covering up too modestly (“weirdo”) and no matter what you wear, you can’t win.

Reason #3. When a woman is raped and people ask, “What were you wearing?” as if she is the criminal rather than the survivor. As if the cause of the crime is “having a female body.”

Reason #4. When a celebrity posts a vacation pic on Instagram and hundreds of trolls post vile comments criticizing her flab, stretch marks, and cellulite.

Reason #5. When a new mom is breastfeeding her child at the park, and she’s told to go somewhere else because “um, that’s not appropriate to do in public.” (Meanwhile, men whip off their shirts all the time and trot around beaches, pools, and parks, and nobody is offended.)

The reasons go on and on.

My point is, it’s pretty easy to see why millions of women feel tormented about their bodies.

In a thousand different ways, every single day, we are told, “Your body is not good enough,” “Your body is sinful,” “Your body should not be seen publicly,” and “You are disgusting.”

It is time to REJECT those lies. Because that’s what they are. L-I-E-S.

This week, here’s my challenge for you.

The next time you notice yourself thinking something negative about your body, stop yourself right in the middle of that thought.

Stop yourself abruptly, like you’re stopping a moving train that’s headed in the wrong direction.

Tell yourself, “Whoooooooa. Nuh uh. Nope. No way. Excuse me? That is a cruel thing to say, and I’m not allowing myself to speak to myself in that way.”

Stop that thought. Then see if you can replace that negative thought with a positive one.

For example, instead of saying to yourself, “Ugh, my butt is way too big” flip that thought around. Say to yourself, “Thank you, butt, for being big and strong and beautifully round. Thank you connecting to my leg muscles. Thank you for helping me walk and get through my day.”

Practice flipping negativity thoughts into positive ones. All throughout your day. Keep practicing.

This might feel kinda weird at first, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. And the more you do this, the better you will feel.

I am urging you… Reject the lies you’ve been fed. Reject the negativity. Reject the shame. Reject, reject, reject.

For centuries, women have hated their bodies and it’s time for this madness to STOP. Be part of this revolution. You can start by changing the thoughts inside your own mind, the words you say privately to yourself, and the words you say aloud.

Together, let’s create a world where 97% of women think intensely POSITIVE thoughts about their bodies every day, not intensely NEGATIVE ones.

This would be a radically different world. I want to live in that world. I know you do too. Let’s build it. For ourselves, for our daughters, and for the generations to come.
