On this week’s episode, I’m getting real with Kara Loewentheil about how you can train yourself to do whatever it takes to achieve your success. Kara has built her coaching business up to a million dollars in revenue after just three years – in large part because she refused to give up when things were difficult.

Kara Loewentheil is a Master Certified Coach and hosts the fabulous UnF*ck Your Brain Podcast. Three years ago she left her legal career running a think tank behind and became a life coach. Today, she teaches feminist women how to undo the effects patriarchal society has had on their brains and build authentic confidence from the inside.

Kara is such an awesome example of what a thriving coaching business can become if you draw on the right tools to build it. We talk about how we as coaches can sometimes misuse our tools on ourselves and slow down our work as a result. Have you ever been to an event like a concert, a musical, a play, or maybe an athletic competition and right in the middle of the event, something goes terribly wrong, like the singer slips and falls on stage, right on her ass? That has actually happened to Beyoncé numerous times, by the way. Remember the Super Bowl?

Or there’s a problem with the microphone, or someone in the play forgets their line and there’s this long awkward pause, or the athlete stumbles during the final lap of the race and it seems like they’re not going to finish – those are the moments when the whole audience gasps. Everyone’s holding their breath. Everyone’s wondering, “Oh my god, what’s going to happen here?”

It’s always so incredibly inspiring when the person you’re watching decides to stand up and keep going. You watch that person rise up to their feet. They dust themselves off and they keep rocking right along undaunted. Maybe you watch that person toss their broken mic offstage and finish the song with no mic, totally raw and acoustic?

Yes, it’s always so thrilling to watch someone keep going, despite having a few stumbles along that way. That is a true hero. You’ve probably had a few moments like this too in your own life; a moment where something didn’t go exactly according to plan, but you did not quit.

Instead, you said to yourself, “Alright, this situation kind of sucks, but I ain’t stopping ‘cause I’m poppin’. I’m going to reach my goal and nothing will stop me. It’s happening, whatever it takes.”

As coaches, as business owners, we all need to develop a whatever it takes attitude. You want more clients, you want more money, you want to build your dream coaching practice, then you need a positive attitude and you need resilience so you can recover quickly and get back on track after experiencing some kind of problem or snafu.

And that is what today’s episode is all about. We’re going to talk about how to develop a WIT mindset, whatever it takes. First, as always, I’m kicking things off with a segment that I call your Two-Minute Pep-Talk.

Here’s your Two-Minute Pep-Talk for the week. This is the part of the show where I share some motivation and encouragement and inspiration to get your week started off right in 120 seconds or less.

So, a few weeks ago, I had this one day that was just a total hot mess. It was a jam-packed day. I was teaching several classes online, plus I had several back to back coaching sessions with my clients, plus a bunch of other things were happening simultaneously, webinars being announced, newsletters going out to my various lists, program announcements, you name it.

Now, normally my team and I are on point. We rarely have any issues. We run a tight ship up in here. But on this particular day, for whatever reason, it just seemed like everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. Links weren’t working, half my PowerPoint slides mysteriously disappeared, emails that were supposed to go out automatically didn’t go out for reasons unknown.

It was just one technical glitch after another. And by the end of the day, I felt so annoyed, exhausted, and also kind of embarrassed. Like, hello, I’m a professional up in here. This whole day felt like amateur hour. But after running my coaching practice for 12 years – almost 12 years – one thing I’ve learned is that success isn’t about doing everything perfectly.

No, success isn’t about perfection at all. It’s about resilience. It’s about bouncing back as quickly as possible after experiencing a setback. So I used all, and I mean all, of my life coaching tools on myself and it wasn’t easy, but I managed to turn my attitude around.

And instead of feeling discouraged and defeated, I flipped my mindset and I told myself, “Okay, today was not my best day. Today felt like one big old setback after another. However, I still have some big goals that I’m determined to achieve this week and I’m going to find a way to make it happen. So if I need to build a new PowerPoint deck and reschedule my webinars and redo those classes and ten other things, it’s happening, whatever it takes.”

That phrase, whatever it takes, is so powerful. It’s a mantra that really works for me. But what about you? Write out a short powerful mantra that you can say to yourself when you’ve experienced a setback and you’re feeling down and you need a change in your attitude ASAP.

Here are some options for you. And as I say the following phrases, see if there’s one that really grabs you; one that feels like, “Ooh yeah, I like that one. That resonates with me.”

During a crappy moment, you could say to yourself; I won’t back down. Or, this isn’t the end of my story. Things got off track, but that’s all changing now. I’m getting this train back on track. I ain’t stopping now. Somebody just said that to me in the last hour session, “I ain’t stopping now, Susan Hyatt.”

The show must go on. I am unstoppable. I can figure this out. I will try a new approach. I am doing this. Onward and upward. Stand up and keep marching. Rise up. This is just a minor setback. Keep going, keep going, keep going. I’ve got this. I am stronger than my obstacles. I am strong and I can handle this. I will not be stopped. Not today, Satan… or something else.

Find a short phrase that makes you feel powerful in the face of adversity. Get your phrase, lock it into your mind, write it down on a Post-it Note and stick it on your laptop, or print it, frame it, put it on your desk. Get it printed on a coffee mug. See it, read it, say it, and say it, and say it.

Words are so powerful and having the right phrase can really give you that extra little push to flip your attitude around. And please remember that everyone deals with shitty moments, regardless of the profession they’ve chosen. Lawyers lose cases sometimes, authors get rejected by publishers, don’t I know it.

Dancers slip and fall. Journalists get the facts wrong occasionally, and it’s very embarrassing when it does happen. And when you run a coaching practice, or any other type of business, there will be plenty of snafus throughout the years; audio files that don’t upload correctly, video meetings that freeze up, launches that don’t go as fabulously as you had hoped.

If you allow yourself to feel defeated and paralyzed by every little tiny thing that goes wrong, then it’s going to be really very quite difficult to grow your business. You just cannot allow yourself to be derailed by every little setback. You’ve got to adopt a whatever it takes attitude.

Now, you might be starting your coaching practice with no marketing budget and no assistant and no team and no social media audience and not a ton of professional connections, but if you’ve got passion for your craft and a whatever it takes attitude, then you’re going to be A-okay.

You’re going to be a success. A whatever it takes attitude is what separates the coaches who throw up their hands in defeat and quit coaching after a year from the coaches who grow and thrive and earn money consistently. So, decide right now that your new business motto is, “Whatever it takes.” Pep-talk complete.

It’s that time again. It’s interview time. It’s that moment where I chat with an inspiring coach and we talk about her work, her marketing strategies, her daily habits, and how she built her dream coaching practice. So today, we’re talking with the amazing Kara Loewentheil.

I love this woman because she is wicked smart with a big heart to boot. And I’m excited to ask Kara about a time when she experienced a setback and how she got things back on track. Does she have a personal motto, like whatever it takes or the show must go on or something similar? Let’s find out. Here we go.


Susan: Welcome to Rich Coach Club, Kara Loewentheil.

Kara: Thanks for having me.

Susan: Oh my god, I am so excited to talk to you for a variety of reasons, but one is, you’re like the resident Unf*ck Your Brain diva because, if you guys don’t know Kara yet, you need to. The name of her podcast is Unf*ck Your Brain, and she literally specializes in helping people think different thoughts so they can have better lives. So we’re talking about whatever it takes, and I eluded in the recording before this interview that I have had some days over the last 12 years where things didn’t necessarily go as planned. Ever have anything like that happen, Kara?

Kara: I don’t know what you’re talking about. My journey as an entrepreneur has just been sunshine and rainbows and everything working out exactly perfectly.

Susan: So the coaches listening to this, they may, right on this very day listening to us, be experiencing a lot of compare and despair, a lot of shame, wondering whether or not they should even continue with this. And I introduced my mantra which is, whatever it takes. Like, when I basically felt like I had flushed $4,500 worth of Facebook ads down the toilet, I’m like, “You know what, Susan Hyatt, you’re going to figure out another way to sell your program and nothing is wasted. We do whatever it takes up in here.” But I’m curious for you. Give us a story about when things didn’t go as planned and what you told yourself.

Kara: I mean, listen, $4,500 is child’s play. I have wasted so much more money on that on Facebook ads that didn’t work. I mean, that’s like an appetizer.

Susan: Oh my god, what are you saying?

Kara: I think the story that most embodies this for me – there’s so many. Asking me a time I failed, it’s like every other day. But last year, so I started my coaching career coaching lawyers, and I transitioned to what I do now, which is I’m a feminist confidence coach for women, mostly. So there was obviously a rebranding process and I had to change my offerings. It was this whole transition. And I did a business retreat with a coach who was wonderful and was very helpful, and then she gave me this whole marketing plan to follow and it was supposed to be dialed-in guaranteed. Like, you do these webinars, spend this much on ads, use my ad person, this many people will show up, this many people convert, and you make a lot of money. So I was like, great, I have a plan. So I followed the plan and I spent – I’ve probably repressed the exact number, but I think I spent $30,000 total. And I did not have a million-dollar business by this point.

Like, I was all in on myself and on my business, but that was a big amount to me at the time. My revenue for that year was $200,000 or $250,000. So that was not nothing. And this was the beginning of the launch. So I did this whole thing. I hired the Facebook person, I built the funnel, I ran all the ads, and then I think one person signed up from that, maybe two. I think I made back, say, $10,000. So in the end, I lost, let’s say, $20,000. So I lost like 10% of my revenue that year on Facebook ads. But my version of whatever it takes, which I love as a saying, is a tool called massive action, which I learned from my teacher. And my version of massive action is – I mean, what I say to myself is, like, you just keep trying things until you get where you want to go. So massive action just means – what usually we do is, like, engage in all these ongoing negotiations with ourselves about when we’ve tried enough things and are allowed to just quit and feel sorry for ourselves, you know.

So that’s what we’re usually doing is just, “Well I don’t know. I tried four things, what should I think about that? Should I think I’m done yet? Should I think it was a failure yet?” It’s like all this constant negotiation. And massive action is exactly that, do whatever it takes. It’s like, I’m getting to the goal, so we’re just going to keep trying shit until something works. And that’s really what I did. It turned out to be a six-figure launch and now it’s turned into a program that has had almost a million in revenue from it.

Susan: Amazing.

Kara: And it was because I just tried everything. It was like, okay this webinar doesn’t work, maybe I need to do a different webinar. Okay, maybe webinars aren’t my strength right now, I ran a five-day challenge and I had a Facebook group and I coached in there and I recorded case study interviews with clients and released those on the podcast and I tried varying what I was doing on the podcast and, you know, I just kept doing things until the end. I had given myself three months to launch because it was sort of a new thing. In the end, it was a six-figure launch. But if I had just been like, “Well I got a professional marketing plan and it didn’t work, so obviously no one wants this and it’s a terrible idea, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

Susan: I love it. Okay, so I don’t know that I have heard massive action talked about in that way, because massive action to me, the way I’ve understood it taught is, you take a lot of action. And like, real action, not pretend busywork action, which is basically what I got out of it. Like, are you doing real work or are you doing busywork? But I like the way that you just explained it, that massive action is, and you keep taking action until you reach the goal.

Kara: Yeah, because it removes – like my clients, and a lot of your listeners, are perfectionists, right? So they get really stuck in analysis paralysis, like, “I don’t know what’s the best thing to do and what if this one doesn’t work and then I’ll feel bad about myself…” and then they just don’t do anything. And I think that massive action removes all of that because it’s like, it doesn’t matter what you do first. If there’s 20 things you could do, you just do one. If that doesn’t work, you do the next one. It’s like you just keep going. So it kind of removes all of that evaluation and negotiation to me. It’s like, how do I know when I’m done? If I have the thing I want. If I don’t have it yet, I’m not done, so what am I going to do next?

Susan: Love it. When I first started my company, I had a list of things that Brooke Castillo said was appropriate to try. There were like eight things on the list. And for those of you listening, Brooke is on episode number four, and it’s an amazing episode. So anyway, I did every single thing. And then, I’m like, okay, what else can I do? And I think that that’s the attitude that I’ve always had and I try to teach as well to my peeps, that giving up is not part of this program.

Kara: Right, you’re not done until you have it. And it changes because what happens is people are like, “I don’t have the thing I want, why not?” And their bran gives them all these self-defeating self-critical answers. Like, it’s because people don’t want to buy it or it’s hard to sell it or there’s too many people or you’re not good enough or you don’t know what your people – like, that’s the question we’re answering, why isn’t this working? Massive action, for me, removes that question. The answer is always, 100%, because you haven’t done what it takes to have it yet.

Susan: I love it.

Kara: So keep going.

Susan: Tell me something that happened within the past week where you had to say, “You know what, we’re still taking action up in here. We’re not going to have a pity party.”

Kara: Yeah, I actually had some personal stuff this weekend happen, and it’s the kind of thing where, in the past, it would have been easy to be like, “Well I’m sad now so I can’t do any work.” You know, especially when I used to work for someone else. Sort of, like, “Well, obviously the cure for this is ice cream and Netflix. Now I’m really sad so maybe I just won’t make my revenue goal this year.” Instead, I was like, okay, we’re totally going to be sad. And of course, if I need to stop and have a cry, I’m going to. I’m not going to hold the whip on myself, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t get anything done. It just means we’re going to do work while we’re sad, which is actually a thing that’s possible to do.

Susan: Do you guys hear that? It’s possible to do work while you’re sad.

Kara: People think it’s not. They’re like, oh I have a feeling so I can’t do my work.

Susan: Exactly. And honestly, you guys know I love you, which is why I created this podcast and every other program I have under the sun for coaches, because I love coaches, but we will use our own tools to bullshit ourselves. So it’s like, oh I really need to feel my feelings right now and process, and that’s all I can do, therefore I can avoid that launch or I can avoid writing that blog or I can avoid going to that networking event. And I’m so with you on that. I’ve got to tell you, the thing that cured me of using my sadness or disappointment or anger or whatever it might be as a reason to not do my work – I’ll let you guess, who cured me of that?

Kara: I’m going to say Brooke…

Susan: No, actually Brooke did…

Kara: Or your son, was going to be my second guess, Ryan Hyatt.

Susan: Yeah, Ryan Hyatt, because on any given day, there were and are shenanigans. So if I’m waiting for my children to behave for me to feel like I, as a mother, can do my work, are you kidding me right now? I’d be one broke-ass bitch.

Kara: Yeah, totally. And in fact, what I did was use it as part of my work. So I did an Instagram post about processing feelings and showing that authentic experience I was having, rather than just being like, now I have to hide or I’m supposed to be perfect because I can’t do my stuff. I still showed up and served, maybe in a little bit of a different way. But I like to think about, you know, those little leashes you can attach children to. Like, you’ll see a preschool and they’ll have a leash with like six kids on it?

Susan: Yeah.

Kara: I like to be like, that’s what we’re doing with feelings. We’re just strapping them all in and taking them along for the ride.

Susan: That’s a great way to think about it because we’re not denying that those feelings are there. We’re not sweeping them under the rug. We’re just putting them on a leash while we get some shit done.

Kara: As you say, if you’re waiting until – we all feel perfectly motivated and inspired and have level blood sugar 37 seconds of every day. Like, you can’t…

Susan: Level blood sugar… Scott Hyatt would be screwed.

Kara: Like, all three of those stars only align for a few moments a day, if we’re lucky. So you can’t build, at least, the kind of business that I want to build and you’ve built, the kind of businesses we have, you can’t do that in 37 seconds a day when all the stars align. You have to be willing to do it even when you don’t feel great or you do feel groggy or you are sad or you have thoughts about the thing you’re doing or you don’t know what’s going to work or you just failed. I mean, so many people – like, I see this in my clients who are starting coaching practices or other businesses or whatever. Obviously, I get a lot of entrepreneurs too, even though it’s not technically my niche. And one of my clients once sent me her plan, and then she was like, “So how will I know when this has failed?”

Susan: What?

Kara: And I love her and we did such great work on it, but it was such a beautiful, like, that’s what our brains do, right? It’s like, how do I know when to give up? That’s what our brain is asking us, as opposed to what will I do to make sure that I succeed?

Susan: And also, I was talking with my Facebook ads person, actually, because she sees the backend of so many coaching businesses. And she was talking about the fact that she was at an event over the weekend and just noticing the difference in mindset between people who will become successful, no matter what, and people who seem to have so many things going for them, but they just flounder and won’t. And it is interesting to observe because, over the years, I’ve coached thousands of coaches and it really doesn’t matter if you’re coming to the table with a lot of money behind you or not. It doesn’t matter if you’re coming to the table with a spouse or not. It doesn’t matter if you’re coming to the table with kids or not. What matters is whether or not you have an unshakable belief that you’re going to do this thing.

Kara: Yeah, and I think, as a mindset coach, what’s so important for me to tell your listeners is that, okay, some people are just born with that belief and that’s great; a lot of us who are successful had to create that belief on purpose.

Susan: Right.

Kara: So it’s not like, oh, I don’t have that belief now, so I guess I’m not meant to be successful. If you don’t have this belief now, you’re not going to be successful with that current belief, but thankfully for you, there’s a whole industry of mindset coaches and there’s a lot of stuff for free. You don’t even have to hire someone, right? But you have to learn how to – learning how to think and believe something new on purpose is how you create that unshakable belief in your own success, if you don’t already have it.

Susan: Absolutely. So I can tell you that there are days when it’s easier for me than others to have the whatever it takes mindset. Sometimes I have to create it and sometimes I’m just, like you said, my blood sugar is level, those 37 seconds are easy. But when it’s not, you’ve got to dig deep. So walk people through – what do you think is the best step by step process to get to a whatever it takes mindset?

Kara: That’s a good question. I mean, I always teach awareness as the first part. So I would say the first thing is just – like, when you think about the idea of massive action, what does your brain say? Notice what’s going on in your brain. Are you always looking for evidence that something won’t work? Are you – like, I like to make my clients specify how much they’re willing to try, because most of us aren’t. It’s like, are you willing to try like three things, five things? How many things are you really willing to try? And it’s fascinating. People have a number. They’re like, of course, maybe the first thing won’t work, but if the 12th and a half thing doesn’t work, then it’s over.

So getting to know your own brain and whatever arbitrary random subconscious thoughts you have about how hard you should have to try or how long something should take is the first step. Because we also have a lot of that – it’s like, oh, it should be happening by now, or it shouldn’t take this long, or it shouldn’t be this hard. We have a lot of those thoughts which are just totally random. They’re not true. So I think that’s the first step, becoming aware of it. And then – I mean, I recommend, think about something in your life that you are – most of us are committed to not dying. Like, we’re going to do whatever it takes to not die…

Susan: I don’t want to die…

Kara: Right, like, if we have to run really fast from somebody, we will, even if we don’t run. If we have to, like, move into the woods and forage, we will. Most of us are really committed to something. So thinking about how committed you are to that thing and then looking at your business and being like, am I showing that level of commitment to my business? Am I really willing to do whatever it takes? And being honest with yourself about that. And then, I always recommend bite-sized chunks. So you have to set that commitment to yourself of massive action of, like, I’m going to keep taking action until I get this thing. And then I would brainstorm a whole bunch of things you could do. Pick a number, like 20, and don’t let your brain say, “I don’t know…” because it immediately will want to say that after thing three. So don’t let it say that.

Tell your brain you have to come up with 20 things to do and go down the list. And as you start, I think sometimes where people get stuck is they’re like, I don’t see how to get from where I am to where I want to go. And the truth is, you don’t have to have that whole vision. As you start taking action, you will learn and next steps will become clear to you. So you have to be committed to the process no matter what, but you don’t actually have to – like when I started my coaching business charging $1,500 for six sessions, I did not have an exact plan to get to the million dollars. But I still got there, and in three years, because as you go along, you learn and you see new opportunities and you see new steps on the path. So don’t let yourself, sort of, get into overwhelm. It’s like, oh well for massive action, I have to see how to get from there to here or here to there. You don’t, you just need to see, what are the next five steps in front of your face you’re going to take?

Susan: So good. And I love, love, love – let’s talk about, how much money did you make your first year as a coach and how much money are you on track to make this year as a coach, because I think it’s important for people to hear this.

Kara: These numbers are hilarious. My first year as a coach – so if we’re talking calendar year, it’s a little of an unfair comparison because I only started in, like, June. But in 2016, I made like $23,000. So we can even call it $40,000 if I’d been doing it the whole year. But under 50. And then 2017, I made $200,000. And then this year, it’s going to be a million.

Susan: What, what? It’s so amazing. And here’s what I love about you; would you say that the bulk of your referrals or leads come from where?

Kara: It’s all from my podcast.

Susan: This is what I love. It all comes from your podcast, and you’re selling what?

Kara: Feminist confidence coaching. So I’m not a business coach, which I think a lot of people tell themselves they can only make money if they’re, like, coaching other coaches or being a business coach, and that’s totally not true.

Susan: It’s totally not true. You’re the best evidence for so many things I love to tell people, so I’m delighted that you’re here making it.

Kara: Well you had a hand in my making, so that makes sense.

Susan: Well, I don’t even tell people that. I’m just like, don’t tell me that; why don’t you go look up Kara, because look what she’s doing. Okay, so I want to thank you for your time, and where’s the best place for people to find you?

Susan: So good. So let me ask you one last thing; what’s something that’s always in your purse or your bag?

Kara: Always in my purse and my bag? I mean, other than the obvious of, like, my wallet – I still have lawyer brain, I’m like, well… I mean, I have a little bit of a lip balm problem, which is like, every time I see a new lip balm, I’m like, “That one could be better than the one I have.” So let’s just pretend that I’m taking massive action towards finding the world’s perfect lip balm. That’s what I’m going to tell myself.

Susan: I would also say anything rose scented is…

Kara: Well, and do you know how many rose lip balms there are? So it’s really a problem.

The next time you’re feeling discouraged about something that’s happening or not happening in your coaching practice, I want you to visualize your biggest hero; someone you real admire, real or fictional, living or dead. Imagine you’re asking this person for a pep-talk for some advice, what would your hero say to you?

Would your hero say to you, “Yeah, you should probably quit. It’s just too hard. Pack it in. Forget this whole thing. Don’t even bother trying again.” Is that what your hero would say to you? Is that what Oprah would say to you? Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Serena Williams? Is that what Amelia Earhart or Ruth Bader Ginsburg would say to you? Hell no.

Your hero would probably say to you, “Hey look, you’ve had a tough day. You’ve had a setback. You’ve made some mistakes. You’re human. It’s okay. But right now, I want you to get back in the saddle and keep going. Don’t give up now. Make a new plan and keep moving towards your goals. Promise yourself that you’re going to do this; whatever it takes.”

That is the kind of thing your hero would say. So when you’re having a moment of discouragement, ask yourself, if I could text my number one hero right now and ask her for advice on this situation, what would she urge me to do? What would she say to me? You know she would urge you to stand up and fight for your dream, whether your dream is to line up five more clients or make an extra 50K this year, or get a book deal, or give a TED Talk, or whatever you want to create.

Your dream is worth the effort. You can find a way forward. Whatever needs to be done, you can do it. Thank you for listening to today’s episode. I hope you’re feeling ready to rise up like a phoenix from the ashes and keep working on your goals, whatever it takes.

Don’t forget, figure out some type of mantra or motto, some type of short powerful phrase that you can say to yourself in those moments when you’re feeling defeated. It might be whatever it takes or the show must go on, or nothing can stop me, or something else. Find a phrase that resonates with you and put it somewhere in your workspace. Maybe on your desk or put it on a Post-it Note on your computer. This phrase will become light a light switch. When you see it and say it, you’ll flip your attitude back where it needs to be and you’ll get your day back on track.
