Welcome to, you've Got Nerve, the podcast that teaches you how to conquer your fears, upgrade your mindset, and get up the nerve to go after whatever you want. If you wish you had the guts to go all in on your goals, dreams, and desires, this show is for you. I'm master certified life coach Susan Hyatt, and I am so excited for you to join me on this journey. In today's episode, I'm coming at you solo to talk about the nerve to wear your age like a crown. So a few years ago I had an encounter that felt like a splash of ice cold water on my face. I hired a digital marketing strategist to help with a few challenges I was having in my business, and let's just call him Jake. Jake was in his mid twenties and he was armed with all the latest buzzwords and trends, but his approach to writing content was peppered with gendered language that was completely off-brand and frankly, quite offensive.
So I explained to Jake that while I appreciated his efforts, his style just wasn't quite hitting the mark and his response, well, I thought you would want me to help you sound smarter and younger. I blinked, unsure if I had heard him correctly, smarter and younger. Was he implying that I wasn't quite cutting it in the intellect department and that my years added layers of dullness that needed to be stripped away? Oh hell no. Yoko? No. Oh. So at that moment, I felt a mix of amusement and exasperation. His audacity was almost comical. So here was this young man suggesting he could magically elevate my intellect and peel back the years with a few keyboard taps. It was like he believed that he had the digital equivalent of the fountain of youth at his fingertips. And I couldn't help but wonder where this idea came from.
Did he think experience in wisdom were liabilities rather than assets? So I did what any self-respecting professional would do. I thanked him for his time and I promptly fired his ass. The idea that youth inherently equates to intelligence and appeal is a myth that needs to be busted. It's a flawed perception that undermines what an older generation brings to the table. Because let me tell you something. The idea that our brains turn to mush as we rack up birthdays, it's bullshit. There's this ridiculous notion floating around that as we grow older, we somehow lose our intelligence. Society acts as if our ability to learn and adapt is on some sort of timer. Newsflash the wisdom and experience that comes with age, it can make us better. But this ages script we're handed, it's like it's written by someone who can't see past the cover of the book. And in business and in the workplace, ageism can show up in all sorts of ugly ways. Maybe you get passed over for a promotion or you find yourself on the receiving end of some condescending remarks, and it's not just missing out on promotions and opportunities. Ageism can worm its way into your personal life too. Like the dumb jokes about being a tech dinosaur or that patronizing tone that says, thanks, but we've got this Boomer, by the way, I am Gen X.
This constant undercurrent of you're too old for this, can really start chipping away at your confidence. It's like a slow drip, drip, drip eroding your sense of worth and leaving you wondering where you fit in a world that seems to be racing ahead without you. So how do we kick this ageism to the curb? Recognize that your years on this earth are diamonds and pearls, not something to shove in the back of the closet. We've got to own our intelligence and flaunt it with the confidence of someone who's been there, done that, and have the life stories to prove it. Looking back at my conversation with Jake, it was more than just a clash over content. It was a big flashing, neon sign pointing to the biases that we're up against. And as a proud 50-year-old woman, my age is a huge part of who I am. It's in my voice, my brand, and the wisdom I bring to the table. And I wear those years with pride. It's a celebration. I wear my age like a crown.
