When new clients hire me for business coaching, I always ask, “What are your goals? What would you like to learn?”
Very often, people say things like this:
– I want to learn about Facebook Ads. I know there are people making seven figures a year using these kinds of ads. Can you show me how?
– I want to set up a sales funnel on my website so I can sell products 24/7, in my sleep. How can I do that?
– I want to create a digital product and have a six-figure launch. You’ve done that, right? Can you teach me?
I love Facebook ads. I love sales funnels. I love seeing women make tons of money. And yes, I can sit down with you and give you a master-class on launching a program and how to set up your landing page, your confirmation emails, your back-end systems, and all that stuff. For sure.
But before we get into all of that stuff… I have a question.
And here it is:
Dear entrepreneur:
Can you look someone in the eye, smile, shake hands, confidently introduce yourself, and explain what you do for a living?
Can you do that?
Can you look them right in the eye?
Can you look someone right in the eye and say, “I’m a life coach,” or “I run yoga retreats,” or “I teach women how to shed physical and emotional weight,” or whatever it is that you do?
Can you say the words, out loud?
And, can you do it without feeling ashamed, without shrinking, without getting defensive, without immediately bolting for the snack table to soothe your stress levels, without feeling the need to over-explain yourself?
I sure hope you can.
Because, here’s the thing:
You can have the fanciest, prettiest website in the entire world… you can have the best copywriter… the best photographer… the best team… every resource in the world… you can spend thousands on business training programs… but if you can’t look someone in the eye and confidently explain what you do… none of it matters.
As business owners, I believe we’ve got to get back to basics.
We need a solid foundation. A clear message. Confidence. Self-belief.
Even if you run an online-based business, you cannot hide behind a screen forever. If you’ve got shaky confidence about what you do, it’s going to show through. Sooner or later, people will sense it… online and offline, too. And people won’t feel excited to make purchases from you. And your bizzle will fizzle. Trust me on this.
So, here’s my challenge for you, this week…
Let’s strengthen your foundation.
I want you to introduce yourself to three people—offline, face to face—and smile, and state what you do for a living.
Do it. Even if it feels terrifying. And then three more. And then three more. Rip off the band-aid and just do it. It will get easier every time.
You can’t build a skyscraper on a shaky foundation. So ladies, let’s get back to basics. Eye contact. A smile. A handshake. Speaking for twenty seconds about the work you love so much. Connecting with people, face to face.
This is the crucial foundation that everyone needs.
You can build it. Start today.
