How to Scale Your Business Successfully

Ever feel like you’re spinning in circles trying to figure out how to scale your business successfully?

I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve struggled with the fine line between impossibilities and potential, and I know that one of the biggest issues with coaches is that they have no idea how to scale their business when their schedule is already packed. And scaling your business successfully requires the capacity to accommodate growth.

Trading Hours for Dollars

Scaling your business successfully requires a massive mindset shift. Stop basing your decisions on where you are right now and outline your goals. You want to earn $100k+ per year? Start envisioning what your day-to-day work will look like once you reach your goals, and start thinking like a 6-figure entrepreneur.

I’m gonna get real honest here.

Growing the business of your dreams is really hard fucking work. You’re going to have moments where you doubt yourself. You’re going to have moments where you feel like an imposter who’s faking it till you make it. And you’re going to have to set some really firm boundaries with yourself.

Scaling your business means you have to stop standing in your own way.

Are you afraid to raise your prices because you think nobody will want to work with you, or do you believe you’re unworthy of raising your prices?

Can you afford to hire a copywriter who can finish that 5 email nurture sequence you *keep* putting off?

What’s it going to take to get you to block off space on your calendar, batch some content, and feel more confident in your capabilities?

If you want to understand how to scale your business successfully, you’ve got to dive deep inside yourself and really look at what it’s gonna take to shift your mindset into gear.

This episode of Rich Coach Club has everything you need to implement changes and start scaling successfully!

It’s go time!

FULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT:

Welcome to the Rich Coach Club, the podcast that teaches you how to build your dream coaching practice and how to significantly increase your income. If you're a coach and if you're determined to start making more money, this show is for you. I'm master certified life coach Susan Hyatt, and I am psyched for you to join me on this journey.

Hey, coaches, I have a question for you before I dive into today's topic. So the Rich Coach Club Facebook group has been renamed Go Time. Y'all know, "It's go time" is one of my favorite sayings. Go Time is the name of my planner. Go Time is the name of my YouTube show. And I have been toying with changing the Rich Coach Club podcast name back to Go Time. I would love for you to tell me your opinion. So feel free to just email support@susanhyatt.co, or talk to me inside the Go Time Facebook group. Tell me what you think.

Okay, so today's episode is about how to scale your coaching practice. I have so much to say because I'm so sick of the word scale, and everybody wants to do it. But we're discussing a topic that many coaches agonize over, something that keeps you all awake at night, whirling over the possibilities, tossing and turning as you try to figure it all out.

What is this mysterious scaling? Dun, dun, dun. Listen, the biggest issue that I hear from coaches is that they have no idea what it means, how to scale, and what to do when their schedule is already completely full. Now, I know many of you listening are like, I would love for that to be my problem, that my schedule is completely full. But trading hours for dollars leaves many coaches burnt out and unable to solve the problem and the puzzle of how to scale. And I'm somebody who still likes to meet with people one-on-one. So we're going to fix all this mess today on the podcast. Plus, I have a simple exercise that'll help you sleep better at night, so let's go.

Okay, so when it comes to scaling, it can feel really confusing and even impossible. I get it. I've wrestled with scaling myself in the past. And in the early days of my business, I remember, I just wanted to be fully booked. And then when I was fully booked, I barely had time. I barely had time to shower, much less come up with a solid strategy on how to scale.

And there's so much to discuss when it comes to scaling, more than I can ever cover in this podcast episode. Scaling is something I work closely with my clients on inside my Mastermind groups. So On the 6, which helps you scale to six figures, and inside The Mastermind, which helps you to go from six to multiple six to seven figures. I will share a few ideas today that'll help you unclench your shoulder and your jaw and breathe a collective exhale when it comes to scaling.

First, an easy way to scale without taking up more of your precious time is to raise your prices. This can be tricky, because raising your prices can stir up a lot of doubts, like what's too much, or will my clients pay that? I remember years ago, the very first price increase that I was scared to make. I remember I was charging 125 an hour for a coaching session. And I was standing in my kitchen with Scott Hyatt, AKA the silver fox, and I was letting him know, okay, I have full-time clients paying 125 an hour consistently. I think it's time to raise it to one 50. And I remember, Scott is my biggest supporter, but he was like, will people pay that? And I remember it made me so mad. And it made me mad because I was very clear on the value I was bringing in those coaching sessions. And I was also very clear on the results that my clients were experiencing. And so, I knew when I was raising my rate that my coaching was worth it.

And I think that a side note here is you have to believe in what value you're bringing and understand your worth, and then that makes raising prices a lot easier. But I too had to be coached each time I raised my prices until I got to a place where I kept proving that people would pay it. So when these doubts arise, I encourage you to stop that noise. Tell your doubts to shut up already and focus on the value you bring to your clients. Forget the number. Think back to a few of your ideal clients, those who've made serious transformations in your work together, and journal out the impact you've helped them make in their lives. And once you're able to see the solid proof on paper and the value you bring, it's so much easier to affix a price that matches that value.

Now, I will go out on a limb here and say, probably, what you're doing is priceless. Okay? Let's make that clear. What you are doing is priceless, but we value making money and paying our bills and growing wealth. Therefore, we must affix a price to it.

Another way to scale your coaching practice is to create group experiences, like workshops, classes, mastermind groups. This allows you to enroll many clients at the same time and multiply your revenue. So keep in mind that you'll need to set aside time to create the experiences, like writing a curriculum, but once the upfront work is complete, group experiences can help you scale quickly while making a serious impact.

Now, in the beginning of my company, I really thought I just wanted to only do one-on-one work. And I wasn't quite sure how my coaching skills would translate to a group experience, but once I tried it, I was hooked. And I do think it's important to get some one-on-one coaching experience under your belt so that you can handle and manage the energy of a group. But I will always have groups as part of how I scale.

Yet another way to scale is to create products, like journals, digital courses, card decks. You could have fun merchandise, like t-shirts and hats. Again, there's some upfront costs in these ideas, but they can be very lucrative when done well. And you also want to think about products as, what's the goal for the products? So, for example, with the Go Time Planner, I am not making millions off my Go Time Planner. And why? Because the strategy behind the Go Time Planner isn't necessarily to make money off the planner, it's to provide something amazing and have a touchstone product with you, my client, to help you so that you're consistently coming back to me. I'm always in your face. Those of you who have that Go Time Planner, you get notes from me every day. I love that idea.

Now, if I wanted to create a big business plan to scale that planner, I obviously could, but I'm focused on some other things. But there are ways to do it and it can be lucrative. But let me tell you something. I'm not here today to rattle off all the ways you can scale your coaching practice. Actually, I'm here to tell you that if you're not working on what your truest self wants, I do not care how much money you're making or could make. I don't care what expert told you that you need an online course, or that your coaching practice will flop without a membership site or passive income. I don't care. If you're not running a practice based on what your truest self wants, what you truly desire, you're operating in the red.

If you create a group coaching experience, but spend every night wishing you could serve clients more intimately, then you're operating in the red. If you create a passive income product that brings in the dollars, but you really wish you could just run a coaching practice, where you take women on epic retreats around the world, you guessed it. You're operating in the red. Here's the truth smack for you. Scaling ain't shit without heart. Okay? Instead of getting swept up into all the ways you should scale your coaching practice, ask yourself, does scaling this way make my heart happy? If not, stop shoulding all over yourself and listen to your heart.

Here's an interesting story. So I attended an event with lots of multi-seven, eight figure earners. And there was one woman in particular who had a lot of questions for me, because I am always talking about self-care and boundaries and having a life, and not just having your business be your entire identity. And she was someone who focuses on helping entrepreneurs scale. Highly successful, wildly successful. And she was at this retreat to learn, yes, but couldn't really partake in a lot of the fun stuff, because she had to keep running back to her room to deal with business. She was obviously super stressed out.

When it was my turn to talk about my business and what I really hoped for, I mean, she just kind of stomped her feet on the floor and she was like, "Listen, can you just move into my office and teach me how to take care of myself and like my life?" And I remember I was so taken aback, because that's how so many entrepreneurs feel. They get into this, they have fun making money, and they start to listen to experts who teach them how to make money, but there's no heart in it. And I am a fan, I am a huge fan of making money, but I want to make sure that your truest self is delighted with what you're doing and how you're doing it.

So does scaling this way make my heart happy? Yes or no. If the answer is no, I promise you, there's a way to do it to satisfy your heart, your soul and your bank account.

Okay. It's time for a community win. Now, listen, this community win is so fun, because I feel like it embodies the resilience of Go Time, the creativity of entrepreneurship, and the spirit of an unstoppable woman. So my On the 6 client, Jonelle, is a nurse by trade. She's also a coach and her daughter just delivered her granddaughter. Now, Jonelle was told that because of COVID, she couldn't be in the delivery room. And so, what she decided to do, because she knew this was a rule that could potentially keep her from witnessing the birth of her grandchild, she decided to become a doula. I'm not kidding. She trained to become a doula so that she could be in the delivery room. And she wrote, "COVID was not going to stop me." So she was absolutely, despite COVID, able to be in that delivery room and support her daughter, and witnessed this miraculous birth.

Now, I think that that is such a great example of, okay, how many of us would have been like, Oh, right, sure. Of course, COVID. I can't be in there, what a bummer, instead of thinking about if the result you want is to be in the delivery room. So think about whatever result you want in your business or life, then how could I accomplish that? There's always a way. There's always a way. So congratulations, Jonelle. So amazing.

And if you're listening to this and are inspired by this story, you want to get yourself inside the Go Time Facebook group. It's free to join. There's lots of women like Jonelle in there. It's a goldmine of amazingness for you. And if you just search Go Time on Facebook, you'll see it. Join the group. We would love to have you there.

So this week, I want to give a special shout out to SleepMatic, who back in April said, "Fresh and real. I really appreciate the candid and real advice Susan offers. Where a lot of people are over-complicating things, it's great to see a fresh and real perspective." Thank you. I try real hard to not be complicating things. So Mork and my new pup, Mindy, are sending lots of puppy kisses your way.

One more thing before you go. If you feel a little called out or wounded by this episode, just know that I've been in your shoes. There have been several times in my own business that I made decisions to scale without really tuning into my heart. Even in the past year, I made some decisions that took me away from my brand and diluted my message, but I'm fucking done with that. Okay? Y'all are going to start to see some real, real, real. I'm here to show up fully and ruffle some f-ing feathers. You too? Good. It's Go Time, Boo.

Thank you listening to this episode of the Rich Coach Club podcast. I hope this episode has inspired you to scale with heart. And if you want to join a group of entrepreneurs who are learning how to scale with heart, you're going to want to check out my On the 6 Mastermind or The Mastermind. In July, everybody gets to come to my hometown of Evansville, Indiana and have an amazing retreat together. We're going to have a rooftop party Thursday night, an all-day workshop on Friday, and then on Saturday morning, a hike for those who want to hike, and a brunch picnic. It's going to be fabulous, as well as a whole year's worth of learning with me and Patti Rantapaa and my faculty. And if you upgrade to The Mastermind, or qualify for that, we're going to Costa Rica. So check out the details. I hope to work with you inside one of my Mastermind groups.
