Hello and happy Monday! This is Susan Hyatt and it’s GO time. This is episode number 160. This is a show where we talk about goals, and courage, and going after what you really want in life.
One of the number one things clients ask me is, “how do you get so much energy??”
They want to know, because they are TIRED. They are EXHAUSTED.
They are having a hard time focusing and finding the energy to do the things they need to do in a day.
Listen, I get it. I do. My alarm clock goes off at 4:45 every morning.
Today, we’re talking about how to bring your energy levels back up, so you can make the most of your day!

Let me ask you a question…
How are your energy levels today?
You feeling good? Feeling on FIYAH? Or maybe you’re feeling a little tired? Lethargic? Like it’s hard to focus? Maybe you’ve got a task you need to complete today, except, you’re just so tiiiiiiiired. It’s hard to motivate yourself to dive in.
In this episode, we are gonna talk about how to bring your energy levels back UP so you can make the most of your day.
So, for me, a typical day starts at 5am. My alarm goes off. I lace up my sneakers and head out for run. I usually listen to music and get tons of ideas while I’m running. Sometimes I pull out my phone, mid-stride, to record a voice note for myself so I don’t forget any of my new ideas! Then I head home for breakfast. Then I head into my office and get to work.
There’s no such thing as an “ordinary” workday for me, but generally, my day might include a couple of 1-on-1 coaching sessions with clients, or leading a group coaching session, meeting with my team to figure out our marketing plan and content calendar for the next few months, recording a couple of podcasts like this one, putting out a new blog post or newsletter, checking into my BARE DAILY community to say “hi” to those amazing clients and reply to their comments and questions, and of course, chatting with peeps on Facebook. Yeah. It’s a lot!
Almost every week, someone asks me, “How do you have so much energy?” or “How do you manage to do everything without burning out?”
My answer is pretty simple. I make my health a top priority every day. I work out religiously. When I’m hungry, I eat. When I’m tired, I rest. I genuinely love my work, so that helps me stay energized too. (It’s hard to feel sparkly when you hate your job! So loving my job helps A LOT.)
However, the #1 thing that helps me stay energized has nothing to do with going to the gym or eating kale. The #1 thing is that… I work on my thoughts.
When I say, “I work on my thoughts,” what does this mean? It means that when a negative, draining, exhausting thought comes into my head (which happens all throughout the day, every day) I don’t allow that thought to “stay” in my head for very long. I notice it. I challenge it. I reframe it. I change what I’m saying to myself.
In the coaching industry, this is called thought-work. And THIS, more than anything else, is what keeps me feeling energized all day long.
Here’s an example:
If I look at my to-do list and it’s insanely long, I might think, “Ugh, I will never finish all of this! I am so behind on everything! Why did I allow this to happen? I hate myself!” and as I’m thinking those thoughts, what happens? Well, I start to feel tired, drained, stuck, heavy. My energy levels plummet. If I allow myself to keep thinking those thoughts, pretty soon, I’ll be curling into a fetal position, or diving headfirst into a bag of potato chips, because I will just feel so hopeless and exhausted!
Instead, I NOTICE when I’m having those thoughts, just like I might notice when my car’s check engine light comes on. And when I notice some crappy thoughts in my head, then I do some thought-work.
I can say to myself, “OK, Susan, you’re having a really negative moment. But everything you just said to yourself, that’s NOT actually true. You CAN handle your to-do list. You CAN do this. You don’t have to finish everything today, just pick the 2 or 3 most important things and do that! You are smart. You are capable. You got this. Put on some music and get to work… this will be fun!”
Just by talking to myself in a different way, immediately, I feel a shift in my body. Right away, I feel lighter, happier, more energized, more optimistic. Again, this is called thought-work, which is really just a fancy way of saying, changing your attitude!
I do thought-work on myself all the time, all day long. When I feel grumbly because I don’t feel like going for a run at 5am, I do thought-work to convince myself to get outta bed. When I feel drained because my publisher wants me to do ANOTHER round of edits on my book, I do thought-work to convince myself to focus and just finish it. Whenever a negative, powerless thought comes into my head, I work on that thought and change it, A.S.A.P.
I cannot emphasize enough HOW MUCH thought-work has changed my life. Once I learned this skill from MY first life coach, I was like, “Are you serious right now? All these years, I could have been CHANGING my thoughts and feeling better? I love this! I need to become a coach so I can teach this to other people, too!”
The TRUTH IS… you can have a celebrity personal trainer and work out every day and drink the purest vegetable juice and take your vitamins and get 9 hours of sleep every night and take care of your body like it’s a Ferrari or a Maserati, but even if you do ALL that stuff… if your head is still full of crappy, negative thoughts… then you are going to feel exhausted!
That’s why it’s so important to take care of your body AND your mind.
I encourage you to try some thought-work on yourself, sometime today. The next time you notice yourself sinking into a negative mood, change it. Change your perspective. Change the way you’re talking to yourself. Give yourself an attitude adjustment. This is not complicated, it’s just a matter of staying aware of what you’re thinking and noticing your thoughts throughout the day. When negative thoughts arise, you gotta NIP ‘EM in the bud!
The more you do this, the more energy you’ll have. Try it and see for yourself. I promise, you don’t need eighteen cups of coffee. You just need to upgrade your thoughts.
It’s GO time!
