OK, let’s get into today’s episode…
If you’ve been following the news lately, then I’m sure you’ve seen the recent explosion of news about men like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, and many others.
These men abused their positions of power. Some of these men demanded sexual favors from colleagues, and blackmailed colleagues who refused. Some of these men engaged in totally inappropriate groping and touching, or worse. Some exposed themselves without consent. Totally creepy, disturbing, illegal behavior.
And the worst part is… all of this has been going on for YEARS.
But now, in 2018, FINALLY, all of this is being brought to light. The tide is turning. And FINALLY, justice is being served.
These men are losing their jobs. They’re losing their credibility. Their fans are outraged. They’re being dismissed from TV shows and movies. Class action lawsuits are being brought against some of these men, like Weinstein. And more men are being exposed (and called to justice) practically every day. It’s like a massive forest fire that’s spreading—in a good way.
How did this fire begin?
Well, it began because of courageous women like Amber Anderson. Like Lysette Anthony. Like Asia Argento, and Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Barth.
These were some of the first women to come forward and make a public statement.
These were some of the first women to say, “Something awful and unacceptable happened to me, and the world needs to know.”
Because of those women—and many others—a match was lit, a fire started, and a revolution began. These men are going DOWN.
On social media, women everywhere have been using the hashtag #MeToo to share their stories of assault and abuse.
With every #MeToo post, more and more women are seeing, “I can share my story, too. I am not alone. My sisters are standing with me.”
One spark of courage ignites more courage.
One hashtag leads to another voice, then another, and another.
This is how ideas turn into revolutions.
This week, I have a challenge for you…
I want YOU to be the match that lights the fire.
If there’s something that needs to change, don’t wait for somebody else to speak up. Don’t assume that somebody else will handle it. Take the lead. Be the one who makes a scene. And I’m not just talking about sexual abuse. I’m talking about EVERYTHING and ALL KINDS of scenarios. Your apartment. Your neighborhood. Your kids’ school.
For example, if you live in an apartment with a dingy lobby with broken light fixtures and old, peeling paint, and your landlord hasn’t upgraded things for ten years, be the one who speaks up. Write a letter. Make a call. Get your fellow tenants to join you and add their signatures. Start a wave of change.
Or, if you work in an office where nobody takes vacations, everybody works on weekends, and everybody is stressed and exhausted all the time… be the one who speaks up. Be the one to say, “You know what? This isn’t acceptable.” Urge your manager to start a company-wide wellness program. Or send an email to the CEO. Or post an anonymous note in the lunch room. Or volunteer to lead a lunch-time yoga and meditation class. Be the one who starts the revolution.
As soon as ONE PERSON speaks up, the effect is contagious. As soon as one voice is raised, almost immediately, other people start rising up and saying, “Me too.”
Decide that you’re going to be THAT person.
There are SO MANY things in our world that desperately (#guncontrol) need to be changed, improved, or radically overhauled.
Be the match that starts the fire.
It’s GO time.
