RCC 98: Be Disobedient

How often do you find yourself being passive and meek, even when you have a gut feeling that something might be wrong? Is it other people telling you to calm down or that you’re overreacting which forces you into being an obedient woman?

I had a recent situation that made me stand up, follow my gut instinct, and make a scene. You know that I am all about making a scene when needed, and I want to tell you this story to encourage all of you to be disobedient women. It’s not about being rude, but rather active and making sure you’re treated with respect, and I’m inviting you this week to dig into areas of your life where you might need to make a scene.

Join me this week as I share a short story with you about why we, as women, need to speak up and be disobedient. Disobedient women make a whole lot of money, spark movements, and make shit happen, so decide today that you’re going to be one of us.

FULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT:

Welcome to the Rich Coach Club, the podcast that teaches you how to build your dream coaching practice and how to significantly increase your income. If you're a coach and you're determined to start making more money, this show is for you. I'm Master Certified Life Coach Susan Hyatt, and I'm psyched for you to join me on this journey.

Can you remember a time in your life when you just had a strong gut feeling that something was wrong? Even though everyone kept telling you, “Oh, it’s fine, stop worrying, you’re overreacting, calm down,” you just knew something was wrong and you were right?

Maybe it was a doctor’s appointment. They told you nothing’s wrong, you’re perfectly healthy, and they brushed you out of the office, but the doctor was wrong. Or maybe it was a situation with your kids. A situation where your spidey senses were tingling and your intuition just told you something’s messed up.

Well, I had a situation like this recently with my money. People, I’ve got an epic story for you this week. Buckle in, keep listening, I’m going to tell you a story about why, as women, we need to trust our instincts, speak up, and be disobedient. Because disobedient women are the women who get big things done, lead movements, and make bank. Here we go.

We’re starting with a segment that I call your two-minute pep talk. A dose of positivity, motivation, and smart ideas to get your week started off right. Okay let’s get right into it. So here’s the story I promised I’d share with you. So recently, I had this funny hunch that my local banker had made a mistake.

I had filled out an application and it was very time sensitive. It needed to be handled ASAP. It was the application for the P3. The paycheck protection program that was or is part of the government’s COVID-19 stimulus package for business owners.

For some context, my business, like millions of businesses, has definitely been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I had to postpone my annual event in Italy, which involves numerous clients, 100K in revenue, sales for certain programs because they included live components have been lower than expected, and there’s been a lot of disruptions.

And I’ve been pivoting like a mofo and getting super creative to keep my business strong. And so, for the most part, we’re doing, my company is doing amazing. It’s definitely not my strongest sales quarter ever, but it’s also by far not my worst.

So I’m super proud of myself and my employees. We’ve really been showing up and giving 200% every week, and we’ve been making massive effort to serve our clientele, deliver amazing programs, roll with the changes, adapt gracefully, and be leaders during this strange time.

So we’re doing pretty well. That being said, when I learned that I was eligible for special funding to help cover my employees’ paychecks and create even more job security for them, of course I wanted to get those funds. It’s my responsibility as a CEO to do everything in my power to keep my company as strong as it can be and keep my employees’ jobs secure and reduce anxiety and strain for all of us.

So the moment the doors were open for P3 applications, we were in there immediately. I was probably first in the queue. I mean, this is me we’re talking about. I’m up daily at 4:45am, ready to rock. You got to wake up pretty damn early if you’re going to beat me in any line, I promise.

So my application goes off, away it goes, and then several days pass and I didn’t hear anything from my banker, the guy who was supposedly processing my application. So I email, I’m like, hey, what’s up? And he told me my application was being processed, but there was just this strange vagueness about everything in his email and there were no firm details.

So more time passed, still nothing, no update, no funding, nada. And meanwhile, I start hearing from my colleagues that are local who applied after me that they already got their funds. So I’m like, what the hell? I even talked to my next-door neighbor who banks same place I bank and he’s like, something’s wrong.

So I had this intuitive feeling that something was wrong. So I contacted my banker once again and he gave me another very canned, vague reply. Not really answering my actual questions. Just expressing that it’s a tough time and everyone’s working hard and to please be patient.

So at this point, Scott Hyatt, the silver fox is like, you know, they’ve got an entire team working on processing these applications, just chill out. I think you’re overreacting. And so I really stopped to consider that Scott might be right.

Was I being dramatic? Overreacting? Maybe I should just chill and wait? That would be the obedient thing to do. Not make a fuss, not make a scene, just sit down, fold my hands in my lap and wait politely. But listen, my body, my instincts kept saying something is off.

So instead of sitting back and shutting up, I did the opposite. I got even more assertive. I wanted answers today. It was time to make a scene. So long story short, after emails and phone calls, which including contacting my banker’s boss, I find out my suspicion was correct.

My banker never actually submitted the application. He told me he did, but he didn’t. So, he either lied or he had made a mistake, but either way, my application was just sitting there unsent and forgotten.

So that is why I hadn’t received any funding because my application wasn’t even in the system yet. Is your blood boiling yet? Because just retelling it’s got me excited in a bad way.

So, if I hadn’t made a scene, my application would have probably gotten lost in the shuffle and would still be sitting there unsent to this day. So I had to make a scene and stand up for myself in order to get the situation sorted out.

And so listen, we weren’t rude about it when we called the bank. We didn’t scold them or curse at them. We just calmly stated what had happened and kept pushing until it resolved. So I was refusing to back down. This is what I mean by making a scene. It’s about being active instead of passive, and it’s about making sure you’re treated with respect.

So no more allowing people to walk all over. You’re a queen. Not a doormat. Okay, so that story I just told, that’s just one example of a time when I had to make a scene in order to get something done, but I’ve got tons more examples.

And listen, I bet you do too. What’s one area of your life where you need to make a scene? What’s one area where you need to stand up, speak up, and stop being so damn passive? Maybe you really need to get serious about enforcing boundaries with your clients? So no more emailing you at 11pm on a Friday and expecting a reply over the weekend.

You need to retrain your clients and educate them about how to treat you and how to treat their businesses. They shouldn’t be emailing at 11 o clock on a Friday night anyway. Or maybe you need to get assertive about your sales, your marketing efforts. Really get those funds rolling in.

Maybe you’ve been really passive when it comes to your writing? You’ve watered down your opinions instead of saying what you really think. And hey listen, I hesitated telling this story publicly because I was like, I’m about to ruffle some feathers. But you know what, women need to hear these kinds of stories so they understand it’s not just you being a hysterical woman.

Why wasn’t my P3 prioritized? I’ve got all kinds of theories on that, but anyway, I’m sure there’s at least one area of your life or coaching business where it’s time to make a scene. An area where it’s time to be active, assertive, and maybe even disobedient.

Disobedient women make a whole lot of money. We spark movements, we protect our families and employees and fight for what’s right instead of passively backing down. We move mountains. We make shit happen.

So decide that you’re going to be a very disobedient woman. Disobedient women get shit done. Pep talk complete.

Now we’re moving into the part of the show where I give shout-outs to you. Shout-outs to listeners, clients, all the wonderful people in my business community. And today, I want to give a shout-out to somebody who calls themselves ZCapri. So ZCapri, you gave me a five-star review and entitled it, “A whole mood.”

“The Rich Coach Club podcast is a whole mood. This podcast is full of great life lessons for everyone, even if you’re not a coach. I love that Susan is authentically herself and brings so much fun and simplicity to an otherwise hard to tangle topic. Get yourself a weekly pick-me-up with this podcast.”

Listen, ZCapri, I am kind of hoping you live on the island of Capri, which is one of my favorite places in the whole world, but thank you. And hey, if you have something to say about this show, please go leave an iTunes or Spotify or Stitcher or wherever you listen to podcasts, maybe just post it on social media and let us know you did it because we are now surprising people who leave reviews with gifts. So, thanks for the love. I love you right back.

Okay hey, one more quick thing. What’s on your summer reading list? So here’s a couple of books that I recommend. Number one, Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World. So this book has over 700 reviews on Amazon and a gazillion five-star reviews.

I’ve actually given this book as gifts, as party favors. It’s a book that’s all about women who made history and made their mark on the world and the illustrations are so cute. So we’re going to put the link in the show notes.

And I want to also recommend a book by Ada Calhoun. It’s called Why We Can’t Sleep: Women’s New Midlife Crisis. Oh my gosh, I am a generation X’er, so Gen X peeps, I mean, really any woman should read this, but I have never felt so seen.

So this book is all about the impossible standards that women put on themselves, particularly if you’re of a certain age. Definitely put those books on your reading list. So this summer, instead of reading dumb magazine articles about how to slim down in time for bikini season, read some powerful words about women who changed the world. Expand your mind, expand your income, your legacy, and instead of obsessing about shrinking your thighs.

Thank you for listening to today’s episode. Get out there and be disobedient. Whatever that means for you. Disrupt your industry, be assertive instead of meek and passive. Speak your mind. Stand up for someone who is being bullied or overlooked. Be a disobedient woman because that’s how you build a strong brand, a passionate audience, and bring more money into your bank account too. Thanks for listening. I hope this episode made a difference in your day and I’ll see you next week.
