ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT- EPISODE 3

Hello and happy Monday! This is Susan Hyatt and it’s GO time.

This is a show where we talk about goals, and courage, and going after what you really want in life.

This is episode number 142.

And this is a SPECIAL episode.

This episode is part of a special 7-part series that I’m calling…

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT.

We’re going to discuss a mindset—an attitude—that might be wrecking your mood, your productivity, and your success. I will share some guidance on how to shift your attitude back into a positive, powerful place. Basically, I’m teaching you how to give yourself… an attitude adjustment!

Here’s the attitude we’re discussing today:

“OTHER PEOPLE ARE SO MUCH FARTHER ALONG THAN ME.”

I used to battle this particular thought… all the time. Sometimes, I still do.

Twelve years ago, when I decided to become a certified life coach, I trained with Dr. Martha Beck.

Dr. Beck is a LEGEND in the coaching world. She writes for Oprah magazine. She’s written tons of bestselling books. As far as life coaching goes, Dr. Beck is the top of the charts. The creme de la creme. She’s brilliant.

After getting certified to become a coach, I would constantly think to myself… “But why would ANYONE want to hire ME for life coaching when they could hire someone like Martha Beck? She’s so amazing. She’s so experienced. I’m just… little ol’ me. Compared to her, I’m nobody.”

Maybe you’re in that same boat right now.

Maybe you constantly compare yourself to your heroes and mentors and you feel like you’ll just never catch up.

If you find yourself thinking, “Ugh, other people are so much better than me…” or “Other people are so much more experienced than me…” or “So much farther along than me…” these can be such exhausting thoughts. These are thoughts that leave you feeling discouraged instead of fired up and excited.

So, how can we clear these thoughts out of your head?

With this particular thought, try doing a REFRAME. Try to rewrite the thought in a way that feels empowering instead of discouraging. Basically, you’re framing the thought in a different light.

Here’s an example. Instead of thinking to myself:

“Ugh, Martha Beck is so amazing… I will never be as good as her.”

I could reframe it and think to myself:

“Martha is amazing… and I am amazing, too! We’re different people. We have different coaching styles. There’s room for BOTH of us in the coaching industry.”

Instead of thinking:

“Marie has thousands of fans and she hangs out with Sir Richard Branson and she’s been on Oprah’s TV show… and I will NEVER be as successful as her.”

You could reframe it and think to yourself:

“Maria is my hero. I’m so inspired by her positivity and her consistency. I love the way she rolls out a new episode of her webTV show every week, without fail. I’m going to approach my own work like that—with passion and consistency!”

You can take any kind of bullshit thought and reframe it. Give it a new spin. A new perspective.

Remember, too, that there will ALWAYS be people who are older than you and people who are younger than you… people who are wealthier than you and people with less money than you… people who create more products than you and fewer… people with more social media fans… and less.

You can drive yourself CRAZY comparing yourself to everybody else. OR… you can stay focused on your OWN business, work hard, have fun, and do yo’ own thing. I vote: stay focused on your own shizzle. It’s better for your mizzle and your bizzle. LOL. OK, translation: Stay focused on your own work and avoid the comparison trap. It’s better for your mindset AND your business.

Attitude adjustment: COMPLETE.

It’s GO time.
