Today, our topic is…
ASKING FOR THE SALE.
You might be thinking, “Well, I don’t run a business, so this doesn’t apply to me.”
But actually, today’s conversation applies to EVERYONE.
Because we’re all selling “something.”
You might want to sell…a piece of artwork. You might want to sell a house. You might want to sell a product or service. You might want to sell tickets to an event. You might want to sell your skills to a new employer and get hired. You might want to sell an idea, a plan, a vision to your team at work… or to your family, or community.
Selling doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re selling a product.
Selling means that you’re DESCRIBING something with enthusiasm… and then you’re INVITING people to say “YES” to whatever you’re proposing.
Everyone needs to learn how to sell with confidence—regardless of whether you run a business or not.
Before I share today’s challenge, I have a story for you…
This one time, I was driving through Evansville, Indiana… and I passed my favorite boutique. I noticed a sign in the window. It said: SALE! ALL SHOES AND BOOTS: 50% OFF.
My jaw hit the floor. I pulled over my car to the curb. I leapt out and sprinted over to the store window. Sure enough, they were having a MASSIVE end-of-season sale and EVERYTHING was marked down. And this store has amazing shoes, including Frye boots which are usually $250 dollars.
I am a total shoe freak. So obviously, my heart was pounding. I was flipping out. It was like Christmas Day! And my birthday! And Obama’s Inauguration Day! My heart was soaring with joy!
Immediately, I pulled out my phone and I texted one of my girlfriends. I told her, “Girl, get your ass down to Flutter because they are having a CRAZY sale and it’s only happening today. Seriously. Drop everything you’re doing. Come here RIGHT NOW.”
The way I texted my girlfriend… you’ve probably done similar things in the past, right? You’ve probably gushed to a friend to say, “OMG you have GOT to see this movie!” or “You need to read this book!” or “Come to brunch with me!” or “Girrrrrrl, you need to hit up this amazing shoe sale!”
You’ve probably said things like that in the past, right? You didn’t feel awkward or weird about it, right? You felt excited! You felt enthusiastic! You felt thrilled to share the information!
That’s how sales should feel… all the time. That’s the kind of energy you want to tap into. I call it SHOE SALE ENERGY.
Whatever you’re selling—whether it’s a product, a service, a idea, a proposition—when you’re sellin’ it, it should feel like you’re texting your friend to describe the most AMAZING shoe sale.
Here’s my challenge for you, today.
Get a pen and paper. Or get something to type with.
Take a moment to think… and then… fill in the blanks:
I want to inspire ________ to say YES to _______.
For example, maybe you’ll write:
I want to inspire Megan to say YES to hiring me.
I want to inspire my kids to say YES to putting away their own laundry from now on.
I want to inspire my boss to say YES to letting me work from home every other Friday.
Sometime today, I want you to reach out to (at least) one person and ASK FOR THE SALE. Describe what you’re offering. Invite them to say YES.
Invite them to make a deposit.
Invite them to attend the party.
Invite them to join the Board of Directors.
Invite them to join you for a concert.
Invite them to be a guest on your podcast.
Invite them to review your new plan or proposal.
Invite them to publish an article you’ve written.
Invite them to be part of an incredible revolution.
Invite them to do… whatever you want them to do.
This is the MOST important part to remember:
Whatever you’re selling, try to describe it with SHOE SALE ENERGY.
Describe it with excitement! Describe it with enthusiasm! Describe it like you’d describe the greatest shoe sale of the year!
Your tone should be, “OMG THIS IS SO EXCITING! THIS IS A FANTASTIC PLAN! THIS IS A WIN-WIN FOR BOTH OF US!” not, “Um, so… this is OK, I guess.”
To recap:
Your challenge for today is to ask one person to say “YES” to whatever you’re offering or proposing.
Ask them to enroll. Ask them to donate. Ask them to meet you after work for coffee. Ask them to attend your event. Ask if they’ll publish your essay.
I don’t care what you’re selling, or what you’re asking for… I just want you to ASK.
You can set a timer for 5 minutes, write an email or text, and send it off. Or schedule a short meeting. Keep it quick. Try not to overthink it. Write it. Send it. Be DONE with it.
It’s GO time!
