Crying reveals your deepest cravings

“I’m not a crier.”

Three – three! – members of my Beyond mastermind said this to me before our retreat last month. One woman even shared that she feels “mesmerized” by people who openly cry.

Game on. “Gimme a couple of hours,” I challenged.

Within a few hours, here’s what happened:

They were sobbing, deeply feeling, and letting those tears fall. The makeup of those tears was different for each person, but those tears were healing for all. It’s amazing what can happen when you open up to a group of people who welcome that vulnerability.

Susan Hyatt getting people to cry in the best possible way? Undefeated. 😉

It’s interesting that we don’t often allow ourselves to cry because we’re taught that it means we are “too emotional” or “weak.”

Research shows that the opposite is true. Shedding tears can be good for your health. Shedding tears is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength.

One study found that crying may have a “direct, self-soothing effect on people. Crying activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps people relax.” Another study noted that “shedding emotional tears releases oxytocin and endorphins. These chemicals make people feel good and may also ease both physical and emotional pain.”

Tears are healing and helpful, opening yourself to express whatever emotion you have bottled inside.

There are plenty of times you can find me sobbing at my desk and various other places. Happy tears. Sad tears. Angry tears. Grateful tears. Love-filled tears. I shed them all.

I’ve bawled over dread and exhaustion. I’ve also sobbed over beauty and wonder. The release of tears is a groundswell of emotion about something or someone I care for deeply.

If you consider yourself “not a crier,” I’ve got a question.

What do you care about so deeply that it makes you cry?

The answer to that question just might be a clue about where you’re holding back in life.

A good sob session can unlock your purpose and uncover long-buried dreams. It can reveal where you need to strengthen boundaries, what you need to tear down, and where to pour more of your energy.

Crying has the power to reveal your deepest cravings.

Welcome the waterworks. Pay attention to each drop as you dab it away.

Find the truth in your tears because I promise you – they contain miracles.

And now you’ve got me crying.

xoxo, Susan
