A Christmas fantasy.

I used to have this burning fantasy about my husband Scott. No, not that kind of fantasy. Not exactly.

Here’s how my fantasy went…

It’s Christmas morning. I wake up. I walk downstairs. The scent of coffee and cinnamon buns wafts in the air. I see my husband Scott standing there in the kitchen, beaming, and holding plane tickets. In my fantasy, he says, “Honey, pack your bags… I booked us a surprise trip! We’re all going to Paris! I got tickets for you, me, and the kids! The plane leaves in five hours!” I’d scream with excitement and then we’d embrace while harps and violins played softly in the distance. The perfect romantic moment.

We were married 5 years. Then 10 years. 15 years. 20 years. So many years. No trip to Paris. I kept waiting for Scott to swoop in like a White Knight and make my “international travel fantasy” come true.

Eventually, I realized, “If I want to visit Europe, I can’t wait for someone else to make my dream come true. This is up to me.” I took matters into my own hands. I booked my own damn trip. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Nowadays, I continually remind my clients that it’s so important to “be your own White Knight” and “be your own Santa” and “create what you crave.” Take matters into your own hands. Don’t wait for someone else to make your wishes come true. Because you might be waiting forever.

The other day, my BFF and I wandered into a jewelry store just to browse around. The salesman waggled his eyebrows at me and said, “Oh ho ho, has the lady been ‘good’ this year? Hmm?” He winked at Frances and said, “Maybe ‘Santa’ will get the lovely lady something nice for Christmas?” I laughed and said, “Actually, I’m my own Santa. Mrs. Claus can buy her own jewelry. Thanks.”

When you decide to be your own Santa, you’re filling up your happiness cup up to 100%. And then if someone else does something nice for you, whoa, what a delightful bonus! Now your happiness cup is overflowing. Now you’ve gone from 100% to 150% or even 200%. But your cup was already full to begin with. You made sure of that. You’re not waiting for somebody else to fill it for you. This makes all the difference.

What are you craving right now? A quiet evening at home, baking cookies, listening to Ella Fitzgerald? A glittery holiday party? A new puppy? A romantic date night for two—or for one? Whatever kind of experience you want, create it for yourself. Nobody’s a better Santa for you… than you.
